”ΞΟΜΠΛΙΑ-XOBLIA” 28 of June- 31 of October 2019, Historical Residence-Museum of Lazaros Koudouriotis, Hydra
The National Historical Museum of Athens on December 2018 inagurated the art group exhibition “Xoblia, Plumids & Finery(ornaments)”, inspired by its rich folklore collection and the timelessness of traditional Greek clothing, its organic materials and its unique accompanying jewelry. Selected Greek artists were invited to create an artwork based on the permanent clothing collection of the National Historical Museum of Athens and what is more their work had been exhibited inside the showcases of the museum together with the original costumes and objects over past centuries!A huge honor and source of delight for us…
My participation took part on May 2019 after being invited by the curator of this unique exhibition, Iris Kritikou.
For me tradition looks like a vein that inadventently hits memoirs, even through the collective subconscious, passed on to the next generations as another ”ornament” of knowledge, as a sort of mental Clothing.
The exhibition was of great success , and continued to the Museum Of Lazaros Koudouriotis in the island of Hydra, which belongs to the National Historical Museum Of Greece. For me a dream, came true, as this magical museum is one of my favorite places on earth! When i visit Hydra i always pay a visit to the Residence, as it is considered the historical ornament of the magical island and the feeling you get enjoying its atmosphere and view, it is treasure for the soul!
My participation in Hydra was a composition made of pearls inspired by the flower that we meet in the traditional embroidery of Hydra , but this particular flower is losing its life and its ”blood” by the swords of war-revolution. A symbolic interpretation of the suffering of war. The sword is inspired by the shape of the sword of Admiral Kanaris.
My second artwork was a pearl interpretation of the Greek flag of the island of Hydra during 1821 revolution from Turks. Using the main iconography of the original flag:the anchor stands as a symbol of hope and victory during battleships and the snake wrapped in the anchor symbolizes the power of hellenic nation. The bird stands for the wisdom with which Greece must fight for freedom. The upside crescent moon is symbol of Islam and the cross over it highlights the power of Christianity . The phrase written ”η ταν η επι τας 1821” in the ancient Greek language means or on the shield (beaten) or with the shield (winner). I used the pearls in order to give a luxury tint, a fashionable tint, a ”light” tint of a battle that set thereafter the new face of Greece, liberated from the Turkish Yoke. Then i enriched carefully the composition with various elements that i chose like dolphins, seahorses, chains, ropes, the flower of hydra, swords and a starry night, to create a decorative web respecting the historical identity and at the same time creating a modern version -atmosphere.
Thank you Iris Kritikou for the opportunity to express love through art. Thank you!
*i wish i had more pictures from the opening, but we all were overwhelmed by the power of joy and physical beauty, i must say we had a blast!:-) Luckily i have some lovely memories through images with Iris Kritikou, Sofia Papakosta and Katerina Georgoudaki (sugarline productions)!
